Charles Edward Bolton diary [transcript], 1864.

Typed transcript of a diary kept by Amherst College student Charles Edward Bolton while serving with the U.S. Christian Commission (precursor to the American Red Cross) during the Civil War, Jul-Aug. 1864. Bolton served during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia and describes assisting doctors on the field, distributing goods to soldiers in rifle pits, and being shot at by sharpshooters. Diary was transcribed and edited by Bolton's son Charles Knowles Bolton; location of original diary is unknown.
